PROJECT STATEMENT

Materiality is an important aspect of monumentality. Commonly, monumentality is based upon the idea of megaliths: large stoic masses composed of a homogenous texture that stands imposingly through time. This project seeks to defy this by generating an assembly of textures, extracted from real weathered materials, scaled, scanned, modelled and fabricated to question the idea of time and monumentality. The timeline of this project continuously questions and challenges these ideas as we attempt to create materiality that represents the physical, yet its final appearance reflects our own mimicked fabrication. Can we create a structure which illustrates this idea without the asset of time? Can we mimic the idea of weathering without delving into the realm of pseudo monumentality? Through our tower, we hope to make our original scanned materiality ambiguous, taking the observer through the same journey of questioning that this project has taken us on.
