PROJECT STATEMENT
Concerning monumentality, this project explored the creation of obscurity and depth of under-standing from the lens of the viewer, evoking a sense of time through puzzling as the parts of the whole start to reveal varying figures through layers. Formally, this sense of puzzling was explored through a combination of figure mass, figure void, and figure joint. Within this construct, inFigure reinterprets the function of centering formwork, transforming its temporary qualities into a permanent integration of the design. In this case, centering becomes a driving force to inform the design decisions.
In regard to structure and material, Centrifigural consists of an amalgamation of foam core, CNC wood mass combined with plywood paneling, and canvas-wrapped wood frame. Within these material constructs, various design studies were performed in tandem with the acknowledgement of the difference of material techniques within a single mass, as well as achieving the conceptual idea of layering through translucency.
