Dialogue Within examines an exchange of roles between solid, void and grid; how the solid can become void, the void solid and the grid a shape-shifting intermediary. The project is inspired by the asymmetric symmetry of Philadelphia twin houses and the figure-void qualities of Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures. In our response to these unique forms, 1+1+1, solid+grid+void, = 1. All elements work together to create one shape-shifting form.By emphasizing the formal and material qualities of the sculpture, a dynamic multi-figural interaction within one architectural form emerges. Bright colors highlight the playfulness of the project and corners in the installation. Reflective surfaces extend the grid into the solid, break it apart and reconfigure the geometric qualities of the installation into new readings, encouraging viewers to walk around, duck down, and tip toe to explore and discover the project. Like a dialogue requires interaction between two people, each element in the project requires the other to extendits function and form. Solid, grid and void exist in codependency of one another.
