PROJECT STATEMENT
Nostalgia is a prototype for an interactive pavilion with an accompanying mobile game and social network, all inspired by a childhood toys.
In the pavilion, Nostalgia taps into a common familiarity with the Tangram game to turn its formally complex appearance into an approachable and functionally simple block puzzle. In addition to fitting together on their edges like the original tangram, each piece can also be slid apart and linked with other pieces through an intuitive system of slots and holes. This combination of systems, overlayed with a relaxed and inviting color palette, allows for an endless number of architecturally interesting spaces, sculptures, and games to be created.
In the mobile app, Nostalgia turns problems found in the early stages of the design of the pavilion into a fun and unique game. While “Time Attack” game mode turns the dichotomy of creating either a dense or open structure into a fun balance between scoring points and saving time, “Zen Mode” gives players a relaxed, slow-paced opportunity to create their own designs by exploring shapes and mixing and matching colors. The app also includes social elements like a space for posting designs, as well as the “Playground”, a virtual collaborative workspace for chatting and designing with a community of other players.
Ultimately, Nostalgia is an experiment of and exercise in form, community, aesthetics, and - most importantly - play.
