PROJECT STATEMENT
Suspended Burdenconsists of a diverse scale of arches that are constructed through a series of inverted catenary structures branched from specific anchor points. These anchor points serve as the starting points for growth and the main mass of the form is located towards the top of the structure. The main curves emphasize the pure geometry of catenary arches and create the framework for the branching that twists, diverges, and reconnects to form the internal skeletons. These internal skeletons of branches are infilled with intricate movements of circle packing. Hierarchies throughout Suspended Burden are displayed through various densities: branches decrease in thickness, and circle packing radii increase, as they move farther away from the anchors. Color gradation relates Suspended Burden to its site and further emphasizes hierarchy as saturation of copper coloring decreases as proximity to the library’s façade decreases. This system of part to whole is apparent through the form of Suspended Burden, as each catenary structural curve is interconnected to form the unified whole.
